1. Multi-omics resources for targeted agronomic improvement of pigmented rice

Sedeek K, Zuccolo A, Fornasiero A, et al. Multi-omics resources for targeted agronomic improvement of pigmented rice. Nat Food. May 2023;4(5):366-371. doi:10.1038/s43016-023-00742-9

Pigmented rice is a rich source of nutrients, but pigmented rice lines typically have long life cycles and limited productivity. This research group used the Metabolon Global Discovery Panel to characterize the metabolites of 63 Asian rice varieties comprehensively. These data allowed the research group to identify rice varieties with superior nutrition for further genetic improvement. Metabolomics analysis revealed that Cempo Ireng is the most nutritious type of rice across all Asian rice varieties. Genome editing of Cempo Ireng resulted in an early maturing variety. This study provides a resource for understanding and improving Asian pigmented rice and human health.

2. Whole-genome sequencing analysis of human metabolome in multi-ethnic populations

Feofanova EV, Brown MR, Alkis T, et al. Whole-Genome Sequencing Analysis of Human Metabolome in Multi-Ethnic Populations. Nat Commun. May 30 2023;14(1):3111. doi:10.1038/s41467-023-38800-2

The metabolome reflects the state of human health and disease; therefore, the inclusion of ethnically diverse populations when studying the genetic architecture of metabolites is necessary. This research team performed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and global metabolomics analysis using the Metabolon Global Discovery Panel in 11,840 multi-ethnic participants to elucidate novel genes associated with metabolites and health outcomes. They discovered 1,985 variant-metabolite associations and showed that the levels of 13 metabolites were related to the risk of 12 health outcomes, including type 2 diabetes. This study is the first WGS of the human metabolome in multi-ethnic populations, providing novel insights into understanding human disease.

3. Molecular signatures of post-traumatic stress disorder in war-zone-exposed veteran and active-duty soldiers

Muhie S, Gautam A, Yang R, et al. Molecular signatures of post-traumatic stress disorder in war-zone-exposed veteran and active-duty soldiers. Cell Rep Med. May 16 2023;4(5):101045. doi:10.1016/j.xcrm.2023.101045

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects more than 12% of war-zone-exposed veterans. In addition to emotional numbing and avoidance of reminders, PTSD can progress to systemic outcomes with comorbidities. This research group utilized a multi-omics approach to identify molecular alterations in response to PTSD in veterans and active-duty soldiers. The Metabolon Global Discovery Panel helped reveal molecular signatures of PTSD, including activated inflammation, oxidative stress, impaired angiogenesis, and metabolic dysregulation. These findings can help to address PTSD-related dysfunctions and may contribute to developing prevention and therapeutic treatments.

4. Respiratory virus-specific nasopharyngeal lipidome signatures and severity in infants with bronchiolitis: A prospective multicenter study

Kyo M, Zhu Z, Shibata R, et al. Respiratory virus-specific nasopharyngeal lipidome signatures and severity in infants with bronchiolitis: A prospective multicenter study. J Infect Dis. May 11 2023;doi:10.1093/infdis/jiad156

Bronchiolitis affects 40% of infants in the United States and its severity ranges from mild to fatal. Most bronchiolitis cases are caused by two viruses – respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and rhinovirus (RV). Studies have shown that RSV infection leads to a longer hospital stay length than those with RV infection. Here, this research group used Metabolon’s Complex Lipids Targeted Panel to investigate the virus-specific lipidome signature and its relationship with bronchiolitis severity. Metabolon helped identify 30 discriminatory nasopharyngeal lipids and 8 fatty acids between RSV and RV infection. This study elucidates molecular differences in bronchiolitis severity and could lead to the development of a potential therapy for bronchiolitis.

5. Plasma levels of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are associated with altered levels of proteins previously linked to inflammation, metabolism and cardiovascular disease

Dunder L, Salihovic S, Lind PM, Elmståhl S, Lind L. Plasma levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are associated with altered levels of proteins previously linked to inflammation, metabolism and cardiovascular disease. Environ Int. May 24 2023;177:107979. doi:10.1016/j.envint.2023.107979

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of artificial chemicals with unique chemical properties widely used in industrial and consumer products, such as non-stick cookware and food packaging. The Metabolon Global Discovery Panel demonstrated that PFAS exposure is linked to altered levels of metabolites associated with inflammation, metabolism, and cardiovascular disease in middle-aged humans. This study provides mechanistic insights into the effects of PFAS on human disease.
